CHURCH’S PROFILE OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND NATION-BUILDING INTRODUCTION
- Community Development and Nation Building are one of the main ministries of Setshabelong Bible Church.
- Setshabelong believes and teaches that members of the community must take an active part in the development of their communities rather always depend on scarce resources of government, and we encourage them to this end through our Community Programs.
- All these programs listed below were and are solely sponsored by Setshabelong Bible Church.
COMMUNITY MERITORIOUS – AWARD
The purpose of this community award is to recognize 2 members of the community per annum who are outstanding in their service to the community, some of whom did so with little resources and no help from the government!
This service is celebrated during a Gala-Dinner where a Guest Speaker of a High Profile is always invited. The Gala-Dinner itself serves as motivation and encouragement. The attendees are carefully selected by the Award Committee. They are mostly young people who are given an opportunity to be under the same roof with their Cultural, Political, Business and other Community Leaders and to Motivational speeches from some of these auspicious leaders of our nation.
Attendance is free and some of these Community members will have the occasion to be in a 5-star environment and partake in a 5-star meal for the first time in their lives!
The whole point is to motivate them to look forward to living that kind of life and therefore work hard to accomplish it.
Education Day
Once per annum the Church Conducts an educational day, to encourage the community and the youth about the importance of Education!
Graduates from all over are invited to attend with their full regalia, to serve as motivation to the youth!
We also invite a high-Profile Speaker who will give a Motivational Talk, that should include challenging Graduates to plough back into the community, like giving extra curricula & study lessons etc.
Vocational Skills & Entrepreneurial Skills
Our Church has presence, and will continue to do so, among the poorest of the poor communities. As a result, skills Development is one of our key and core Outreach Ministry. Members of the community are trained in vocational skills and Entrepreneurial skills ranging from sewing, mechanics to business development (where they are encouraged to start up their own business). These vocational and entrepreneurial skills will play a major role in eradicating unemployment and help in contributing to the economy of our country.
TALENT MANAGEMENT
Our Church has established a youth information desk where the youth both in church and in the community can source information. The desk gives out information on skills development programs, career path, internships, Learnerships and Bursaries. it also helps the youth to fill application forms, compile C. Vs, write business plans and refers them to relevant institutions for further assistance. The church has being successful in forming a partnership with the NYDA (National Youth Development Agency) where the Gauteng Deputy Chairperson of the Provincial Advisory Board Miss. Tasneem Motara came during the festive season in a youth developmental camp organized by the church to give information on the mandate of NYDA on how to access its services.
The church is in a process of pursing partnership with the private sector, non-government and government institution authorized to offer and support skills development initiatives. Women, youth, and people with disabilities will be prioritized in such partnerships. We are also pursuing partnerships with accredited facilitators to implement registered skills development programs such Basic Computer Training, Presentation Skills, boiler making, motor mechanics, etc. ensuring that at the end of the program the participants receive a recognized and registered certificate and thereafter be able to be employable. This is a mechanism we are trying to inject as a church to establish skills and talent supply pipelines.
CAREER PATH
The church organizes annual career exhibition targeting pupils in communities were the has presence from Grade 10 -12. The purpose of the exhibition is to guide the pupils to choose correct subjects in line with what they want to study post matric and encourage pupils who are ready for tertiary institutions to apply on time.
WELFARE MINISTRY
It is part of our church’s vision to do community service to the impoverished members of our communities, which include providing meals on a daily basis. We believe in the importance of “giving fish and not only to teaching how to catch fish.” As we say it!
- The Anna Project, which is a project assigned to the elderly women of the church (50 years and above) who are available during the week. Once a week they search around the communities for homeless people and they give them a treat of a warm bath, food and clean clothes! The purpose of this project is to restore the self-worth of the members of the community, homeless or not. This is also so we can find a way to re-unite the homeless people with their families!
HOSPITAL CARE
This project is allocated to our youth the Deborah and Timothy’s of our church, ages 13 to 20 years old. They collect donations and buy fruits to distribute to hospital patients who rarely receive visitors. They then leave them with a worship song and prayer.
DAVEYTON REHAB
Many of the young people in the Benoni District, in the Ekurhuleni region of the Gauteng Province where our church has presence are struggling with drug addiction, particularly a special devastating drug called “Nyaope”. Due to this our church embarked on a REHAB program, hence the attached certificate awarded to us by the Department of Social Development of our government.
YOUTH SPORTS
In order to be able to interact and minister to township youth some of whom are victims of drugs and alcohol abuse, our church youth organize church tournaments.
ANNUAL YOUTH CAMP
- Every year since 2005, the church conducts an annual Youth Camp during December school holidays for all our youth from all the branches of the church.
- Our young people select carefully, youth from their townships who are categorized as coming from poor the of poorest background, to attend these youth camps with them! During the camp, young people are taught life skills, vocational skills receive motivational and spiritual talks etc, by carefully selected able speaks from across our nation.
- The church always receives encouraging words of testimonies from parents/guardians of these from parents/guardians of these young people, about their development, change in lifestyle since they came back from these camps, and how taking them off township street during the festive seasons has saved them from criminal tendencies.
- We have been carrying the costs of the camp through the years, the fee is generally R3000 per person and that goes towards the accommodation and meals, excluding transportation.
